AHSEP Programs 2011 The AHSEP programs are popular and space is limited. Novice The novice program is an introduction to sailing for youths beginning at age 8-15. Students learn sailing basics including: sailing safety, boat nomenclature, rigging, points of sail and related sail trim, basic sailing knots, capsize recovery, and teamwork. This ten lesson program is offered Monday through Friday over a two week period. Two sessions are offered: June 27 - July 8 Tuition: $270 (prorated due to July 4th holiday) Intermediate The intermediate program focuses on sailing skill improvement for youths aged 8 to 17 years. The curriculum first reviews the basics as presented in the novice program. Then, students learn more advanced sailing skills including: crew responsibilities and teamwork, crew position and boat balance, sail trim and shape, building boat speed, enhancing boat performance on various points of sail, and introduction to racing. Students entering the class must submit US Sailing Red Books showing that they can safely steer a boat in all points of sail and have mastered capsize recovery skills. This ten lesson program is offered Monday through Friday over a two week period. Two sessions are offered: July 11 - July 22 Advanced The advanced program focuses on racing and boat handling skills. This program is for graduates of the intermediate program and provides on-the-water coaching to improve sailing and racing skills. Two sessions are offered: June 27 - July 8 Tuition: $270 (prorated due to July 4th holiday) Early Season Saturday Sailing For sailors who have successfully completed at least an Intermediate course prior to the 2011 season. Get a jump on the sailing season with 5 days of open sailing on Saturday mornings. Optimists and 420's will be used. Begins Saturday, May 21 to June 18, 9am to 12pm. Open Sailing Tuesday evenings from June 28th through August 2nd Sailing Adventure Week For intermediate and advanced sailors. This is a one week session concluding our summer. Instead of racing, the focus will be on enjoying sailing in other ways. Weather permitting, we plan to have activities such as sailing to a beach for a picnic, a pirate treasure hunt, and sailing games. August 15 to August 19, 9am to 2pm. Junior Sweeps Regatta Open to current AHSEP students. The Junior Sweepstakes Regatta consists of 4 days of racing on the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers. Optimists and 420's are provided by AHSEP, we ask that parents volunteer to help out with boat and sailor transportation throughout the week. Lunch is provided each day.
