Program Description & Fees
We are proud to offer our adult sailing program in the Atlantic Highlands Harbor as an extension of our sailing education program. Your lessons will begin on land with a thorough review of the principles of sailing as well as hands on rigging of our Flying Scot. The Flying Scot is a stable, comfortable 19-ft, tiller steered centerboard sailboat which serves as an excellent family daysailer or competitive racing boat. You may choose to continue your lessons on the Flying Scot or test your skills on either of our 2 other, larger keelboats: Our BluSail 24' or our Peterson 34'.
Our program consists of four, 3-hour, lessons where you will learn the basics and competently be able to rig, launch, sail and dock the boat with a US Sailing-certified instructor. Each lesson introduces new skills and teaches students the essentials of boat rigging, effective communication between skipper and crew, safety, sailboat handling techniques and enjoying being out on the water. These basic skills are directly transferable to larger boats.

On the water classes can be scheduled on weekdays both day and evening (conditions permitting) and during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. Scheduling is based the mutual availability of instructors and students. During these classes the instructor and student(s) will sail around Sandy Hook Bay practicing the different aspects of sailing. Lessons should be scheduled once or twice a week with the goal of completing them within four weeks. (accommodation of other schedules is possible!) On the water sessions are divided into four 3-hour sessions so each so that participants can learn in a variety of wind and weather conditions. This format also provides the participants with a chance to digest the material and work on their skills. Lessons will be postponed and rescheduled if weather is unfavorable.

Although membership is not required, we also encourage those interested in becoming more involved to consider membership at Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club, where you can further develop sailing skills and develop friendships that can last a lifetime. Once you learn the basics - there are many opportunities to continue sailing by crewing with members who share their love of sailing.
Fees: $895 per student
Students receive the book “Learn Sailing Right!”, published by U.S. Sailing, a 20-minute, basic sailing instructional video* and a 5-foot piece of line to practice tying knots and a certificate upon completion with the opportunity to continue to sail our fleet once successfully checked out.
